i recommend to watch this two films:

– The 11th hour

– An Inconvenient Truth

 

probably best would be to watch them once every month

to make sure that we don’t forget what time it is

and what we have done 

to our world, to ourselves

 

supposedly we are an intelligent species, we human beings

probably even the most complex and advanced life form here on earth

capable of creating such cool and stylish things as Apple computers, iPhones, Botticelli Madonnas, Cathedrals, Taj Mahal, Calvin Klein Underwear, Nikon cameras, World Wide Webs, Hot High Heel shoes, space stations, little robot vehicles driving around on mars and on and on 

 

some of us have come in the form of Mahatma Ghandi, Einstein, Mother Theresa, Plato, Aurobindo, Hildegard of Bingen, Albert Schweizer or the countless unknown ones who have done outstanding things to put their intelligence to the service and betterment of this place

 

and some of us have come as Idi Amin, Stalin, George Bush or Charles Manson to think up such monsters as the military industrial complex, ritual serial killings, torture chambers, concentration camps, monoculture, one-child-politics, nuclear weapons, spy satellites, domestic surveillance and all the other agents of fear, destruction, power-over-others, greed and general un-feeling-ness that does not consider the other beings as brother/sisters but rather as objects in the way

 

and surely we have both those sides inside of us, darkness as well as light

and we can always choose which side we are on

 

there are no rules for that, really!

there is free will given to us humans

 

and the more the time moves on into the 21 century, the more the traditional frameworks of values are disintegrating – religion, family, ethics, humanistic education – we find our selves alone as individuals, left to our own devices, forced to make our own intelligent choices

 

and intelligent our choices need to be!

better be!!!

 

if you watch the films that i mentioned above you will most probably agree that it is indeed high time to make intelligent choices

a lot of intelligent choices

choices that are driven by common sense and empathy of the heart

 

empathy of the heart i think is what we need – and lots of it!

 

genuine feeling for the others is the only remedy that counters the coldness of intelligence, the narrow-mindedness and detail-fixation of technological thinking

a thinking that does not think about the circle of life, that has no concern for the whole thing, that does not consider the benefit of the next seven generations to come

 

we need a way of thinking that knows that we are part of the whole

and the whole is – simply put – our world, Terra Gaia, the 3rd planet from the sun

 

therefore all our actions should strive to contribute to it rather than take away, exploit or destroy

 

watching these films might cause some feelings of panik, pessimism or even depression, but this is not the way to go!

 

the call is to wake up, to get agitated, to get inspired, to act

act in any way

in many ways, big or small

 

we will be able to find countless ways to make a difference, if we want

 

i recommend to watch the films once every month for a year

 

as a kind of 21st century spiritual practice :-)
