meditation

November 23rd, 2009

well, it’s been a couple of month now that i wanted to write about meditation …

and i tried … and delayed and delayed and delayed …

and one thing became very obvious to me:

after 35 years of doing meditation, i can not put my finger on it and say:

this is what meditation is!

and really, that’s very much fine with me : )

because meditation points towards a space beyond the known, beyond the mind, beyond what is express-able in terms of language

it’s something to be practiced

it’s something to be experienced

it’s something very intimate

… so just shut up and be silent for a while ; )

well, it turns out this good advice is not really enough for most of us

not really effective

because in closing our eyes most of us are simply lost in an unknown land

without a map and signpost

without a direction really

experiencing everything from wild phantasies to boring thoughts to sleepy nods to cravings for chocolate to half hours and more of spaced out unconsciousness to pornographic movies to cosy lollypolly drowsiness and back to opening the eyes again : 0

does it sound familiar?

and of course i forgot to mention the peace that we feel at times, the warmth of our heart’s opening and the sudden insights and flashes of creative ideas dropping into the clear pool of our empty mind : )

i figured it would be of little use to describe the meditation experience in beautiful metaphors and poetic references or use up your precious attention with scholarly explanations

i figured it would be best to teach some “how to’s”, some “know how’s”

some tools that make meditation a more precise endeavor, a more concrete undertaking

and so i gathered a small group of interested friends and once a week we sit together and apply some of the lessons that i have learned over the years

my intent is to be as minimal and practical in my instructions as possible

and as open and non-dogmatic as necessary

the following post will be a – weekly updated – synopsis of the instructions

for the participants a reminder of the areas we have covered

for other friends who may read this blog it could be a inspiration to take up some meditation practice

for me a chance to write down some of the things that are already such a integral part of me that i don’t think much about them at all

a reminder how precious meditation is for me

and will always be

you are welcomed to join, where ever you are, sundays at 5 pm middle european time zone

drop me a line if you do : )

obviously there are many schools of meditation, many ways and methods and techniques one can practice

the one i will talk about is the one i cherish most

the be-here-now meditation

open wide awake present moment conscious awareness

technically speaking we are talking about Vipassana meditation

although i am not crazy about the tradition and dogmatic about it

for me open awareness, the awareness of awareness itself is the closest to home that i know

the I Am of every moment of my existence

that unchanging thing that goes thru every possible experience

i feel that’s the active aspect of consciousness itself

this mysterious substance out of which everything arises

sorry : ) again words!

just want to say i don’t use meditation as a means to leave body and life behind

don’t intend to space out into realms of astral light or distant stars

no! i want to be here! now! fully awake! being one with all that is now

and moving with that moment by moment

without concept of right / wrong

without expectation

without attachment

open

this for me is the best practice for life

every day life

let’s have fun with that!
