soft focus

I love the soft focus

In Vipassana Meditation, it is called the peripheral vision

or 360 degrees of sight

Its when you can softly focus on the breath

but still be open in awareness to all other phenomena

as they appear in the stream

of consciousness

gently

without attracting anything

without rejecting anything

without commenting anything

without attaching your I-dentity to any of it

In art, i love the soft focus of some Impressionist painters

the touch touch touch pointillism

expressing more the feeling and atmosphere

rather than the exact form of something

Or the unobtrusive and undramatic rivers of sounds and tones

that make up the ambient music

from Satie up to Brian Eno

Even in cinema there are a few directors who know this art

to escape the dictates of a narrative story

they gently dance around instead

a central message

poetic pictures

dreamlike

Like Andrei Tarkovsky, like Terrence Malick

I know, it is not everybody’s cup of tea

it seems to play against our habitual tendency to control things

to do something with something

to act

we are not really used

to let go

to BE

But hey! No problem.

We can always learn :  )
