International Women’s Day March 8. 2022
“Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”
Today I think of my mother.
She left her beloved profession as a nurse to have children.
And ended up with a weak husband and a dictatorial mother-in-law, practically the slave of a big household.
Today I think of the mothers of Ukraine.
Who are fleeing war with babies and children in their arms.
Forced to leave everything behind, facing a bleak and unknown future.
I write these lines to express my solidarity with them.
Today I think of the mothers of young men in Russia.
Who are ignorant and misinformed about where their sons have been sent and what atrocities those young soldiers are ordered to commit.
I pray for them to stand up and voice their protest.
Why is International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8?
It is, because the most consequential International Women’s Day protest took place in Russia on March 8, 1917.
Thousands of Russian women took to the streets of the capital, Petrograd, now known as St Petersburg, to demand the end of food shortages and of World War I.
It was this International Women’s Day protest that helped prompt the start of the Russian Revolution and led to the overthrowing of the czar.
Today I think of the women of Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and other countries under Islamic Sharia Law.
Who are forced to hide they beauty under formless black covering, never allowed to do anything without male supervision.
Whipped and humiliated when they do.
I raise my fist in solidarity with them.
Today I think of the estimated 200 million girls and women alive today who have experienced Female Genital Mutilation in some African and Arabian countries.
And the estimated 3 Million girls who are at risk to suffer this atrocity every year.
I can just weep in empathy with them.
Today I think of the scores of missing and murdered women of native tribes in Canada and the US and the unknown victims of domestic violence the world over.
Sometimes, this makes me feel ashamed of being one of the male species of this planet.
Who are mostly responsible for this ongoing violence and suppression and domination of women.
~~~
But … today I also think of the new times, the future, the New Age of Female Empowerment.
All the Angela Merkels, the Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezes, the Pussy Riots of the world and all the unknown courageous women and girls of a new generation who stand up and challenge raw male power.
They are my hope for the future.
I call them:
“The Return of the Goddess”
Please share your thoughts with other people, women and men.
