We, humans, have a phenomenal ability to believe in something
To hold something as true and reliable
I believe in you
I believe that the earth is round
I believe in love
And so on
Some people believe in a loving and forgiving god
And some in the stern “an eye for an eye” god of the Old Testament
White beard, thunderous voice and all ; )
Some folks believe feverishly that the covid virus is a hoax
And that the world is run by a paedophilious jewish elite that eats babies for breakfast
And some believe that that is some absolute crap
Pick one truth or another, some of us folks have the obvious ability to believe it …
Its getting really odd when it comes to religion or ideology
Because if we believe that a god exists
Is it the stern father god with the white beard and the heavenly choir of angels and archangels around
Or the gentle Jesus guy we pray to
Or the fiery Allah with who’s face shall never be depicted
Otherwise … (your blasphemous head will get chopped off ; )
Or the quarreling Zeus of the old Greeks
Or maybe no real personified god at all as in the Buddhist belief system
Is it a heaven that you believe in, the one that you will be allowed to join if you have been a good boy or girl and never did or thought any unclean thing
Or is it the heaven where seventy-two virgins are waiting for you when you have successfully managed to blow yourself off in a suicide terrorist attack where you also killed loads of nonbelievers
Uff, I am getting really dizzy by all the choices we folks have about what we can believe as truth … ; )
I am not just kidding here
This “belief” issue is much too serious
Because of the consequences of what we believe as truth
It is obviously more healthy to believe in the true, the good and the beautiful
Than to believe in no future, eternal damnation and no meaning of the whole life at all
It is certainly more practical and effective to strongly believe in yourself, in your abilities and strength and whits
Than to believe that you are a looser and a doubter and everything you could start will end in disaster anyway
And when it comes to the ultimate questions we humans can ask,
like the meaning of it all, where we come from and where we are going,
what’s a good life and what to do with our time here ……
I suggest to take some time and look deeply and honestly onto our personal list of believes
And maybe take time to do this kind of reflection and investigation in regular intervals throughout our life
Maybe we can self-check which of those cherished truths of ours stand the test of our personal reality and which are just …
good sounding ideas
temporary fads
something we have read somewhere
what our parents fed us for breakfast
or simply illusions
Reality check
Because after all, our ability to believe is awesome
Its a superpower, actually
It can move mountains
( well ….. maybe )
Well, anyway
It can not hurt to sit down and really make a honest re-discovery of your believe system
And write it down so you can check in a year or two
What’s still true for you
I just did that (reading my old list ; )
