This is not my New-Year’s Resolution for 2025
This is my Requiem for a Dream
I see dark days coming.
Because the world has turned a way their eyes from the indescribable suffering going on in Gaza, in the Ukraine and in South Sudan.
Because when man is ignoring the mass killing and starving to death of fellow human beings, innocent woman, children, old people, evil has already won.
I see dark days coming, because on January the 20, a “king with no clothes on” will get to sit on the throne of the most powerful nation on Earth, a thoroughly incapable leader driven by sheer narcism and uncontrollable impulsivity.
I see dark days coming for the climate, because this “king” will dismantle the very few positive efforts to unite the world in reducing greenhouse gasses, let go of our addiction to petrol products and work together on global problems.
I see dark days coming for Lady Justice, because the “king” will set examples of legal precedence that will be hard to reverse again, disregard for the institutions that should be the cornerstones of democracy, the checks and balances of the system of modern democratic state.
I see dark days ahead, because the United States will morph from “a beacon of democracy” into something akin to a authoritarian state, a nation that swears “fealty to the king”.
I see dark days coming, because “this king” and his followers show all the hallmarks of authoritarianism:
– Divide and rule
– Blame minorities, immigrants, and “outsiders” for a country’s problems: Exploit national humiliation while promising to restore national glory.
– Reward loyalists and punish defectors
– Spread lies and conspiracies: Undermine the public’s belief in truth.
– Destroy checks and balances: gut institutions, weaken opposition, and/or declare national emergencies to seize unconstitutional powers.
– Demonize opponents and independent media: Undermine the public’s trust in those actors and institutions that hold the state accountable.
– Undermine civil and political rights for the unaligned: Actively suppress free speech, the right to assembly and protest and the rights of women and minority groups.
– Organize mass rallies to keep supporters mobilized against made-up threats: Use fearmongering and hate speech to consolidate in-group identity and solidarity.
– Make people feel like they are powerless to change things: Solutions will only come from the king.
I see dark days coming because of the ethical vacuum that is already widespread in many of the places of power. Kleptocracy, Nepotism, Systemic Corruption, the barrage of Constant Lies, Fake News / Disinformation and Conspiracy Theories multiplied thru Social Media and the masterful Spinning of reality by highly paid Spin Doctors on TV, all those tendencies have been more and more normalized in recent years and have left many people numb and exhausted.
I see dark days ahead, because the gap between the have’s and the have-not’s is rapidly widening into a chasm. The poor stay poor and the rich get richer exponentially.
I see dark days coming because the tech-barons of our day have become the richest men on earth and they are gaining unprecedented influence in politics.
I see dark days ahead, because in many countries all over Europe nationalistic right wing parties are rapidly gaining in popularity and even majorities in government. From Hungary to the Netherlands, Italy, Slovakia, Austria and so on, the idea of a nationalistic strongman leader is taking shape. It’s Déjà vu all over again.
I see dark days coming, because the tables have turned globally and authoritarian nations and dictators are forging alliances and pledging mutual support to work against “The West”.
I see dark days ahead, because people are distracted and disoriented by social media, fake news and conspiracy theories and the lure of unbridled consumerism.
The lack of ethics and the absence of leaders who would embody integrity and a positive vision for humanity leaves many critical young people cynical and numb.

If this sounds like a “Requiem for a Dream” and overly negative to you, well then take off your pink glasses for a moment and look around …
If this sounds like I have lost hope, then no! I have not lost my belief in the potential of a human being to be good, to aspire to the good, the true, the beautiful. I still firmly believe that truth, unity, beauty and goodness is our birthright, the way we are meant to be and live.
I may have lost my utopian dream that this is possible on a global scale, that all eight billion of us would miraculously arrive one day at a society, a system of living together in peace and collaborative harmony.
I believe that – with the state of worldwide affairs that we have now – this is a naive pipe dream.
I believe it will need a complete breakdown of society and a radically new start. But don’t ask me please how this scenario could look like. I am afraid to imagine that.
~~~
I believe that truth, unity, beauty and goodness, integrity, soulfulness, unconditional love and sacredness of everyday living can be achieved today, and here and now.
But only on the small scale, on the individual level.
Maybe even only inside, on the soul level.
I don’t know, maybe I am wrong.
I hope that I am wrong.
But anyway, this is my New Years Resolution:
I will do my very best to focus on the realization of truth, unity, beauty and goodness, integrity, soulfulness, unconditional love and sacredness of everyday living in my own little life, in my own being.
Amen!
So be it!
